YEA LAUNCHES THE COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS EXIT PLAN

The You Employment “YEA” responsible for the development, coordinating, supervision and facilitation of employment for the youth of this country has introduced the community health workers(CHW) module as part of its programmes not only to create employment opportunities for the youth but also to compliment the staff strength of the Ghana Health Service.

Speaking at the Launch,Chief executive officer of YEA,Mr Justin Kodua said the CHW module is aimed at bringing health care delivery to the doorstep of every Ghanaian especially those in remote areas where health facilities are challenging of which falls in line with the Government’s vision of providing universal health coverage and raising and healthy population.

According to Mr Justin Kodua the rational for the CHW exit strategy is to help beneficiaries on the CHW modules transition into sustainable employment and also support them to pursue higher education or develop entrepreneurship skills that will eventually lead to a sustainable jobs.

“Despite the advantages however, the transition from the YEA module can often be challenging for many beneficiaries and sometimes resulting in the beneficiaries not finding jobs – a situation that could best be described as recycling of unemployment. Apart from the burden placed on the beneficiaries of YEA modules including the CHW the exit of the beneficiaries is a loss of valuable resources to the health sector given the resources expanded on their training and skills development”he quizzed.

He further explained that the new leadership of YEA is committed in ensuring that youth are not merely recruited for the two-year period only the module and subsequently let go but also to ensure that they are guided and supported on career options for eventual sustainable employment.

On her part, deputy minister of health,Tina Gifty Mensah has assured Ghanaians that her ministry is working in partnership with its agencies and stakeholders to improve the human capital by creating wealth through health through the development and implementation of proactive policies that will ensure improved health and vitality.

She also urged all the stakeholders to come on board so that together with YEA and the full support from the ministry they can curb the menace of unemployment to safeguard the future of the youth in this country.

She concluded by commending YEA for the wonderful initiative and entreat management to emulate it in all other modules.
