In less than a year, the price of has shot up to about three times the initial price. Consumable goods like rice have shot up to about twice the amount in the past year. The sad thing is that as cost of living increases, similarly, wages reduce not keeping up at all.

The annual inflation rate in Nigeria is around 30%, which is the highest recorded in the last three decades. Annual cost of food has increased by more than 35%. The monthly wages however has not seen any significant change since 2019. On an average the minimum wage a worker is to receive is 30,000 naira therefore making it $19 a month.

Nigerians are going hungry and are seeking for foods at lower prices which are not healthy enough. The president, Tinubu who announced that the long standing fuel subsidy would be ending isn’t doing a good job. The president inherited a huge national debt from the former president Muhammdu Buhari. Oil prices were kept low in the first half of 2023 and about 15% of the money was used to boast health and education.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has spent alot on maintaining the naira on the global market. However, due to the atvities of demand and supply, the naira has not been able to keep up. In May, 2023 100,000 would buy $22 as at Februar 2024, the same amount can only fetch $6.40.

Getting things under control, the state doing everything to regulate food prices. The president is also seeking to reduce importation. The state also helps with 25,000 naira monthly to be given to 15 million poor households. The state is doing all to eradicate the hardship in Nigeria.
