COMMUNITY SCHOOLS IN GHANA

In Ghana, there are as much more community schools than Montessori schools, why that community vs montessori schools arguement? The issue is that most at times some parents cannot afford the fees of these Montessori schools. Community Schools are public schools that provide services and support that fit each neighborhood’s needs, created and run by the people who know our children best—all working together.

Community schools are provided mostly by the government and are tuition free. Some rich and abled people in the society also set up community schools for their neighborhoods. In the past, parents took their children to community schools to escape paying tuition fee. In recent times, parents now take their children to Montessori schools.

Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. In Montessori classrooms children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the highly trained teacher offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process. Children work in groups and individually to discover and explore knowledge of the world and to develop their maximum potential.

Montessori classrooms are beautifully crafted to meet the needs of children in a specific age range. In most community school classrooms, the designs and art works are not beautiful enough.  Most Montessori classrooms are secular in nature, where as in the community schools, they are squared shaped and rectangle.

For some who can afford it, they enroll their children in Montessori schools to help them get the best experience and have a comfortable learning environment. On the other hand most community schools in Ghana hardly have enough space for the kids.

In Ghana, most community schools we see look barely like school bugs. The community depends on the government for every development. In recent times, some members of the community also help in taking care of these schools provided by the government.

Additionally, more Montessori schools are put up limiting the pressure on community schools. The situation however doesn’t seem to be the case for the low income earning families. Community schools have come to stay and help the needy in the society. However, more advancement is needed in these schools.
