What is lucid dreams? Typically, when we dream, we do not know that we are dreaming. However, some people are able to enter a dream and be fully aware of the fact that they are dreaming. According to research, 50% of the world has had a lucid dream at some time in their lives. This is a dream where the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming and can control the things happening in the dream.
Lucid dream occur during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep which is the final stage of a normal sleep cycle. Naturally, some people experience one or two lucid dreams in a month, however, others train themselves to start dreaming lucidly. In an interview with Clovis who experienced lucid dream she said “I wasn’t aware about my lucid dream until one day. When i woke up from sleep briefly and slept back I saw that I was dreaming. In the dream, i was able to control things and decides what will happen next. I think it is natural because it happens unannounced.”

Lucid dreaming is very interesting thing. Being able to explore your dream and control things and events is extremely amazing. Lucid dreams help people to overcome recurring nightmares. It also helps people to overcome phobia that is the fear of sometime. For instance if a person has a particular phobia, in their lucid dreams they can do an exposure therapy. That is exposing themselves to the thing they afraid of and gradually they will overcome it. This will help because the person knows they are not in the real world so the will be bold to explore their fears.
People train to lucid dream, this process is called lucid dreaming therapy. There some techniques that help people to lucid dream well. Firstly, there is reality check. This may involve verifying whether or not you are dreaming. This should be done in real life and during a dream. The person reads a particular note continuously to be able to remember it in their dream.
However, there is waking back to bed. This technique requires setting an alarm to wake oneself up 5-6 hours after going to sleep. This is to immerse the sleeper into RME where they can experience lucid dreams. Moreover, the last technique is called mnemonic induction. This is where a person repeats to themselves some words before going to bed. That is ‘tonight, I will notice that I am dreaming’. This is to program their mind and prepare it for lucidity.
Originally, people who lucid dreams are those who are good at remembering their ordinary dreams. It is important to keep a dream journal beside your bed always. Meditation also helps people to be aware that they are dreaming. Lucid might be interesting but people with mental issues like schizophrenia are not supposed to engage in it. This is because they find it difficult to differentiate between hallucinations and real life events.
