The annual celebration of Ghana’s Independence Day takes place on March 6. This year’s Independence Day celebration was launched in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua. The event is expected to take place at the Youth Resource Centre.
On March 6, 1957, Ghana’s Prime Minister, DR Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghana free from British colonial rule. Following this declaration, the country marks 6th March as a national holiday in remembrance of their freedom from colonial rule. It is celebrated to remember our forefathers who struggled for our country and sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
Over the years, Accra has been the sole host of the Independence Day celebration. The Independence Day was celebrated only in Accra. However, in 2017 this trend was changed. The President of the republic decided to rotate and host the event in different regions to help stimulate the local economy. Tamale hosted the 62nd Independence Day celebration and since then, the venue for the celebration has been rotating among the 16 regions in Ghana.

IMPORTANCE
The importance of celebrating this event is to increase tourism. Ghanaians from the diaspora will come to the country to witness the celebration and display of our culture. This is also a way for local businesses to boost their sales since demand of their products will be on the high. 6th March is also an avenue for Ghana to showcase our rich culture and national pride. The country is able to display our artefacts, food and history to the globe which will in return have a positive effect on our local industries.
Most importantly the celebration of the Independence Day is the reduction in unemployment. The celebration of the event requires a lot of attention and hard work. Therefore, there is job creation through event planning and organizing. Therefore, young people with potential in organizing events are mostly employed during this period to ensure a successful planning of the celebration.
This year’s celebration will benefit the Eastern region in many ways. The region will gain exposure, increase in tourists, boost in sales and showcasing of the region’s heritage and monuments. Business owners; (hotel owners and restaurant owners as well as local business owners) are enthused towards Wednesday. This is because the demand of their services will increase over the week and will help them make more income.
Citizens and tourists are hoping to celebrate this year’s independence in grand style. The eastern region on the other hand is devoted to delivering a very well organized celebration on Wednesday, 6th March, 2024.
