The weather from Monday the 18th of March has been all dark clouds. The looks of the weather yesterday only suggested heavy down pours but unfortunately it did not. However, today, Tuesday 19th March saw an out pour of heavy rains in some parts of the country. With a flooding at mallam market.
Areas included Oyarifa, Accra central, Kaneshie, Bubuashie, Mallam, Kasoa and its environs and others. The rains in other parts of the city were not up to the level in Mallam and Kaneshie. Choked gutters, linked house drains to gutters, narrow gutters among others attribute to massive flooding.
The heavy down pour at mallam and kaneshie lasted for hours as compared to other parts. The main Circle-Accra highway has been flooded. Additionallt, from the Mallam market up to Kaneshie first light. The main streets have been engulfed in in large flowing quantity of water. This has led to flooding at mallam market.
The traffic jam that occurs as a result of this flooding is massive. It is however, no surprise to passengers and drivers who ply the road because they are used to it. According to some drivers and residents in the community, the situation is always like that when it rains.
“The moment the rains started, I knew what would come especially at these parts. Oh, to me the problem has always existed and no one is making an effort to solve the issue. Movement has now become an issue.” Kofi a regular user of the street said.
Residents of the vicinity also shared their experiences over the past few years. Madam Akweley said that the rains disturbed her a lot and usually she would not be able to leave for work. “It becomes difficult to move to work because right in front of my house would be flooded. It is like that every time”.
Bra Matthew a ‘trotro’ driver also shared his grief. “Whenever it floods like this, work becomes difficult and slow. Movement from one end of the city to the other becomes a problem. A lot of my colleague drivers do not want to work when it floods.”
“The market is flooded; hence, customers find it difficult to come. If I had known it’ll rain today, I wouldn’t have come to work. Business is slow here and we are also stuck here. No one can go and come out”. A market woman affected by the flooding at mallam market.
The food did not cause any major damages apart from the occasional vehicles getting stuck up. The Ghana Meteorological Agency has advised the citizenry to stay put. Ghanaians are all advised to take precautionary measures for the upcoming down pours.
