FLOODS IN ACCRA-; “WE NEED TO PUT POLITICS ASIDE”- FORMER ACCRA MAYOR.

FLOODS IN ACCRA

Former Mayor of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (A.M.A) and current Member of Parliament, Mr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, has indicated that there is the need to put politics aside on issues pertaining to flooding in Accra.

He disclosed this in a Morning Show, ‘Omanbapa Kasa’, with the host, Kofi Asamoah Aning on Pink FM.

According to him, Ghanaians should take charge of their environment since it is a national issue.

Hon. Vanderpuije furthered by saying “Ghanaians need to re-visit some recommendations that he suggested under his administration as the Mayor of Accra”.

He added that, the program he wanted to execute in Accra was to make sure that Ghana has a “comprehensive sanitation program.” This will help cover all gutters in the Capital and re-align them by directing them to the “Korle” and “Chemu” lagoons.

“If the A.M.A i

s not supported with the needed equipments, disposal site for refuse dump, and no transport stations built, the issue of the recommendations will still remain unimplemented”, Hon. Vanderpuije added.

The former Mayor blames the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for not providing enough support to undertake the project.

He stressed that, “we made all the necessary working arrangements for the financial proposal with the Ministry of Finance but because Ghana had an agreement with IMF four years ago, we weren’t granted the loan of $500million. The structures were too much, although Parliament approved it.”

He advised that since the IMF program is coming to an end, the government should reactivate the loan to help finance the recommendations, irrespective of which political party is in power.

Mr. Vanderpuije was of the view that, the NDC government introduced dredge-masters which was used to de-silt the “Korle” lagoon and “Odaw” river. This has brought a major relieve but there is the need to build a permanent solution.”

The Honourable MP stated that the recommendations were “sponsored” by the Ministry of Works and Housing and the Ministry of Local Government for the A.M.A to implement. Mr. Vanderpuije added that, the current minister of Works and Housing claims “he believes in the recommendations and will put them into action”.

He concluded by extending his condolences to the bereaved family of the doctor who currently lost her life in the flood.

Background:

On June 18, Doctor Aya Hayfron, who was undertaking her houseman ship at the Korle-Bu Hospital, drowned in the “Kpeshie” lagoon during a heavy downpour. The 32 year old lady who was returning from an evening church service had her car trapped on a flooded bridge. After countless efforts to be rescued by some helpers and her husband whom she phoned from home, the car in which she sat slid off the bridge, leading her and two other passengers with her in the car into the lagoon. With the help of some fishermen, her corpse was found in the lagoon on Wednesday June 20.
