AN ORDINARY DAY IN KASOA MARKET

Life in the market is one of hustling, buying and selling of goods and services. On a normal day, traders display their goods on tables and in stalls. Some others display their products on the ground with cardboards and papers to keep dirt off. In the kasoa market, there are variety of goods and services sold from food items, to home appliances, stationaries, sanitary, hardware goods, materials, etc.

A walk through the kasoa market.

A walk through the market gives you a feeling of disgust as the pavement bricks are yet to be laid. The ground is smeared with black earth soil and when it rains it gets muddy. A look at the small demarcations of stalls for the traders just makes you wonder if they even have the comfort to work. The others who do not have enough to book a stall end up sharing their goods with pedestrians on the small roads.

On market days, the situation worsens as many villages from neighboring villages come and also sell. It is no wonder that most at times these traders are seen under the over pass and on the highway displaying their goods. Irrespective of the directives from the Ghana police preventing traders from selling on the  streets, they still do.

“In the market there is no space and the stalls are also priced at higher prices. Similarly, I cannot afford a stall hence I resort to table tops. In addition, even those who can afford stalls share it with others due to the number of stalls”. Madam Ama a fish monger shared her views and also asked that the market be expanded so they can all fit and be comfortable.

The problem however is the fact that there is no space for expansion. Aunty Joyce a provision stall owner said that however, the government could help them by making the stalls in the market into stories. “Look on top of the stalls, they are all flowed but there is no one to continue the building. If they make the flats stories, it would help us the market women”.

An ordinary day in the market cannot be compared to a market day but the hustle is real. The congestion in the market of kasoa is appalling. The traders call on the government to help better the conditions in the market. In as much as they receive help from the assembly and MP for kasoa it is not enough.
