FIRE SERVICE ADMONISHES PUBLIC OVER THE USE OF STONES AND SACK TO PREVENT GAS LEAKAGE

Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) substation in Buduburam in the Central Region has entreated the public to stop using stones and sackcloth in preventing gas leakage in their houses.

A BAD PRACTICE TO PLACE A STONE ON GAS CYLINDER

Mr Joseph Martin, who is a station master at the Ghana National Fire Service Safety Department in Buduburam bemoaned, “during this year December festivities, we will like to educate the general public about the domestic use of gas and how to handle to prevent fire outbreak in the homes, it is so disheartening to go to someone’s house to find out that they use stones on the regulator to prevent or wrap the gas with sack instead of going to the service centres available to check it for you”.

Speaking to Pink FM a Kasoa-based radio station, he also expressed concern on the playful use of matches and the overuse of electricity. Mr Martin said over-plugging of electrical gadgets can also cause fire outbreaks in homes.

According to the Gomoa East District Fire Service team, cases of phones exploding have been recorded earlier this year in Buduburam. He gave the advice that users of phones should desist from using the phone at the same time charging it. Again, the public should not use mobile phones when cooking using gas.

AFTERMATH OF FIRE OUTBREAK

Mr C.K Amankwah, a leading fireman also added his voice saying that there are three causes of fire consisting of heat, air and combustible material thus, when such risk factors combine in their rightful proportion, they can cause fire irruption. The heat emitting from a mobile phone can affect the surface it’s placed and may cause outbreak.

The team agreed on the fact that the municipality here in Kasoa has recorded some elements which has caused fire outbreak, ignorance, negligence, arson (malicious burning to destroy lives and property).

Mr Amankwah assured the public that the GNFS in Buduburam will continue to provide preventive measures for the general public. This, he said will include offering training on how to use fire extinguishers in homes and offices.

He however added that the Buduburam substation has outlaid some steps which include the inspection of building facilities in the municipality, and also the operating of a taskforce ensuring that the public in commercial and residential facilities have complied with fire safety standards.
