It is four days after the tidal waves that rocked some fishing communities across the country claiming a life in Cape Coast, destroying fishing equipment running into thousands of Ghana Cedis and displacing many families.
Though early days yet, some victims who suffered the destruction are calling on government to, as a matter of urgency, come to their aid by resourcing them to service their loans since they secured loans to buy most of their now destroyed canoes and out board motors.
What happened last weekend has caused a lot of destruction and this is affecting me so much. Most the canoes including mine were purchased through loans and I have not been able to pay back the loan. I am pleading for government to come to our aid”, one fisherman said.
Relatedly, a member of the Council of Elders for fishermen in the Abrofo Mpoano fishing point in Cape Coast, Kofi Nyaako says the extent of destruction by last weekend’s tidal waves would have been minimal if sand winning along the beaches was not rife.
He explained that, over the years, the practice of sand winning for economic purposes in the community has destroyed the shores which served as water brakes. He said the area has now been virtually left with no sand.
Egya Kofi Nyaako made a passionate appeal to government to ensure the illegal activity is ended. He said their colleague, Kofi Mensah, who died during the incident would have been alive if not for some of these issues.
