PLASTIC WASTE UNCONTROLLED IN GHANA

Ghana, as a country is faced by several challenges of which poor sanitation is on a rapid rate. Sanitation is said to be conditions relating to public health, especially with regards to provision of clean water and adequate sewage disposal.

The past government has tried all their possible best to eliminate this act of human but it was all in vain. currently, the present government is putting all possible best to make the country clean, yet, there seems to be no improvement in the disposal of plastic waste.

People drink bottled water or sachet water and drop them anywhere after taking them. Food or any item bought are packaged in plastic bags or polythene wrappers, which are later left to be carried by the wind into open gutters.

The beaches look more filthier where all kinds of plastic waste is found. Mostly, residence living close to the beach dump their refuse which makes the sea appear unclean.

People also dump their refuse into gutters whenever it rains for their own benefit, that is, paying for the disposal at the refuse sites.Plastic bags and polythene wrappers cause flood during raining seasons when they are  being carried into open gutters and make them stagnant.

Moreover, when plastic bags are carried into water bodies such as lagoon and sea, it causes harm to living things in them. Just recently, a whale was reported found dead in Thailand with 80 plastic bags and debris in its stomach. This shows the level to which living things in water bodies are at risk.

Fishermen also fish all night only to catch plastic waste in their nets instead of Fish which discourages them and makes it difficult for them to feed their families.

Improper waste disposal can cause deadly diseases like malaria, cholera, diarrhea and others. Narendra Modi said: “Sanitation should not be seen as a political tool, but should only be connected to patriotism (Rash bhakti) and commitment to public health. Sanitation of a country should not be politicized. Let us forget about partisan politics and focus on making our country clean and a healthy place to live.

Residents of various communities should come out of their homes every first Saturday of a month which is known as Sanitation day to clean up gutters and the surroundings.

How is this challenge of increase in plastic waste disposal going to be tackled? Well, we can use paper bags to package our goods, we can also use weaved baskets when going to buy groceries at the markets and shops or recycle plastic bags into useful items like bags or even some building materials and so on. We can also use Silver-wear utensils instead of using disposable cups, spoons or even plates.

Though this is going to have a negative effect on plastic manufacturers, it will help the country’s economy as the government will not have to spend more money on recruiting more personnel for clean-up purposes. The Zoomlions will be able to do their work effectively because instead of hiring more employees, the government will spend this money on buying tools and equipment they will need to work.

Besides the plastic companies can use the rubber to manufacture other items apart from plastics bags. They can make bowls, pans and home utensils which will also earn them some revenue.

This will help make the country clean and also make it known amongst the countries with good sanitation.
