GOVERNMENT KILLING YOUTH DREAMS

The National Tripartite Committee (NTC) has increased the National Daily Minimum wage. They have increased it from ¢ 13.53 to ¢ 14.88, a 10 percent increment starting from 2023.

This is in addition to a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) of 15 percent over the 2023 National Daily Minimum wage.

According to Seth Mensah on Twitter, he says “So this translates to ¢ 1.86 per hour? The time has come for the government to peg salaries to per hour, and pass a working time regulation. Abolish strike with, define clear constructive dismissal, unfair dismissal, wrongful dismissal, and dismissal because of disability with remedies”.

Government is inefficient in allocating resources. While U.S.A minimum wage is $7 to $ 15 per hour, Ghana’s minimum wage is $1 per day.

Depreciation has eaten the real value of the cedi. In real terms, the government has rather reduced the minimum wage. We should start measuring the right thing.

“Create a productive index. Find a top economist in Ghana and help train people. Know the number of companies in Ghana”. Mr. Samuel Attah said on the breakfast show on Citi FM.

People also say how can the price of bread be more than a country’s minimum wage. The government should consider our private sector employees and some government organization.

We still have a long way to go. 1 dollar for a day’s work is rather on the low side. In fact, by UNDP standards, it’s classified as extreme poverty. We need to create a fairer and more equitable society. Where people can earn a decent wage to meet their basic needs.

If a person is to work for a whole day, let’s say eight hours before being paid ¢20. How do you expect the person to survive in this economic hardship? Inflation is 40 plus so every worker should get a 40 percent increment not a 10 percent

We always complain that our youth are into scams, sakawa, robbery, etc. But we can see it’s not their fault but rather the Ghanaian economic system.

This is one of those rare moments where we don’t know whether to be happy or sad. Even though there is an increment, the question is it really good
