Streetism is a broad term used to encompass the desperate situation
of children who are forced to spend of their time outside their homes, engaging in menial income generating activities in order to survive ,and often having to sleep on streets.
street children are not found in the developing countries alone they are found in large numbers all around the world.
In Ghana street children are of various categories, there are those who work on the street during the day time and
return to some form of family and those who live there permanently without family network .
According to the IQSR journal of Research and Methods in Education 2014, street children are usually the victims of
poverty ,domestic violence either physical violence or mental violence. Children turn into street children when the
find no better place to live on the streets. They come to the street out of despair and desperation.
Furthermore, poverty is the main cause of bringing children to the street as they lack basic necessities of life like,
food, clothing, shelter and health facilities. These children in Sodom and Gomorrah are exposed to various harmful
consequences like poor health, deplorable living environment, physical abuse,
sexual abuse and other serious issues. Although Non-Governmental Organization(NGO) and charity organization
do extend support to the street yet this is not enough. These children on the street give up on their future goal
because of the lack of education and end up joining gang on the street indulging themselves in social vices such as
pickpocketing, the girls going into prostitution and drug dealing in order to earn some income for their up keep on
the street. Girls who sleep on the street are sexually abused by their own street mate the guys and this leads to unwanted pregnancy.
