THE LAW, THE CITIZENS AND THE PRISON

Are our judges and lawyers really applying the law in judging the cases of the citizens of Ghana? Are they being fair or bias? Do they consider the crimes before sentencing offenders? This is a question one must ask as a citizen.

Following current issues on how choked our prisons are, one will ask whose fault is it? Is it the offenders, the judges, or the government, due to limited infrastructure? Indeed Ghana’s prison is an eye-sore, especially where the prisoners will lay their head. The food is also another problem in the prison. All these is as a result of who is brought to prison and what crime did the person commit?

Most times people’s case have not ruled but are being put on remand for a very long time, even before their case will be ruled. Must it be so? All these people whose cases have not yet been ruled and are in the prison are making the place more choked. Not every crime case demands the offender to put in the prison but they end up being there which is very bad.

Ghanaian judges should analyze cases very well before ruling them. The law must be enforced properly and not unfairly. Considering certain cases that has come out in the news,it could be seen that there is no sense in the judgment. If the crime demands a fine from the offender and the offender doesn’t meet the amount does that mean the person should be sent to prison?

This thing must be checked so it can be put to a halt. Instead of a prison sentence for month, they can be given communal work to do with police escort. This can even help in developing the sanity of the country. If this things are being done and laws are used in judging people’s cases appropriately,I’m not sure our prisons are going to be chocked.

The judges must rule cases wisely and stop being selfish and bias, because all these affects the growth of the economy. So there is a need for them to have the country and the citizens at heart.
