SANITIZING THE MEDIA IS NOT THE MANDATE OF THE BNI BUT….LECTURER

A Media Law lecturer, Mr Anim Frimpong Manso have stated that, the sanitizing of the media landscape is not a direct mandate of the Bureau of National Investigations.

His comments come after the BNI has issued a statement of caution to media owners, showhosts and panelists of political talkshows following a recent high level of impunity in the airwaves particularly on an Accra based radio station, Muntie Fm where two political evangelists threatened the country’s supreme court judges with death.

But the lecturer believes this is  and should not have been the duty of the country’s investigation body and see this as a move against the freedom of the press but was quick to add that this is happening because institutions responsible for this task has failed.

“The NCA, NMC and the GJA has failed to do that and now the BNI now have to take the mantle and then come out that they will do that job…..there is this kind of breakdown of law in the media landscape” He said.

He however urged all stakeholders in the media fraternity to come together to ensure that there is sanitary in the media particularly this year been an election year through setting up a strategic plan.

Mr Anim also believes there should be a strategic management of the issues rather than opting for a broadcast law.

“We are operating a system which is volatile that until somebody breaks the law you wont even know that somebody has committed an offence…..the law will be made but how many people will go by it when people have now become so obsessed and they want to air their views on any issue irrespective of whether it is lawful or not lawful. This is where the issue is” He stressed.
