Russian fan leader Alexander Shprygin returns to France

After being deported to Moscow on Saturday, far-right Russian fan leader Alexander Shprygin is back in France and has been detained once again.

Following the violence that marred Russia’s European Championship match with England on June 11, he was sent out of the country back to Moscow, along with 19 other Russian fans.

Shprygin, who is reported to hold far-right views and whose All-Russia Supporters’ Union is backed by the Kremlin, claims he has a ticket to Tuesday’s match against Wales.

“I will be at the match, since I already have a ticket,” he said.

“The French authorities told me I was not deported but just expelled, my Schengen visa has not been cancelled and all the stamps are there,” he continued, “So I can legally be in the European Union.”

The violence before, during and after the Group B match with England left around 35 people injured, and Shprygin was included in the 43 Russian fans to be detained on the way to Lille to watch their encounter against Slovakia.

As a result of the Russian fans’ actions, their national team was issued a fine and a suspended disqualification, meaning any further wrongdoings will lead to the team being thrown out of the tournament.
