RUSSIA COMMENCE WORLD CUP TODAY WITH SAUDI ARABIA

The 2018 FIFA World Cup starts today with the host nation Russia playing against Saudi Arabia at 3 O’clock today,14 June, 2018.

The World Cup tournament returns back to Europe since it was held in 2006.

The host will receive the party underway on June 14 against Saudi Arabia.  On July 15 2018, a new world cup champion will be crowned by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Thirty two (32), teams will battle it out in Russia at the 2018 World Cup and 64 matches will be played in all.

In Russia today, the opening ceremony starts two hours before 9 a.m. ET, that is, 1 p.m. in Ghana at Moscow. There are 12 venues in 11 cities in Russia where the games will be played. Out of the 12 stadiums renovated to the World cup, Luzhniki stadium in Moscow and the Saint Petersburg Stadium will be used the most. Each venue gets a minimum of four games.

World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world and its features 32 countries from five confederations, all of which were able to qualify via regional competition. It comes off every four years.

In this tournament, there are eight groups consisting of four teams. The top two teams from each group move on the knock out stage, which is a 16-team, single-elimination tournament to decide a winner.

Brief about World Cup

World Cup started in 1930 and was organized by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). It’s held every four years since that time, except during the Second World War, the competition consists of international sectional tournaments leading to a final elimination event made up 32 national teams.

First World Cup started when the FIFA President Jules Rimet decided to stage an international football tournament. The inaugural edition was held in Uruguay in 1930, the final match was played in the country’s capital, Montevideo, between the host nation Uruguay and their South American neighbors Argentina. Uruguay defeated Argentina 4 goals to 2 to win the cup.

The World Cup has since become the world’s most watched sporting event drawing billions of viewers.
