POLICE RECRUITMENT: TRAIN PERSONNEL MORE IN HUMAN RIGHT-DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL WELFARE

The Director of Social Welfare, Mr. Daniel Bammah, has urged the department in charge of police recruitment to train their personnel more in Human Right.

Following a recent report of a woman who was assaulted by a policeman at Midland Savings and Loans Company Limited.

According to Mr. Bammah, It is uncalled for, it is a terrible thing and a bad day for Ghana, that at this time of our life, in this modern era, someone can be beaten up, just for the sake of going for her money

He continued to say that, even if the person has done something wrong, you can’t still do that. We need to look at what has happened and actually condemn it very seriously, it is uncalled for.

When asked in an interview with Pink FM, what he thinks might have been the causes of some of these brutalities going on in the country, he had this to say, “I think they might lack the necessary training, but understanding human right should be part of their training”.

He furthered that, if they do not know anything about human right, and they are not well trained, they might think that, ‘force’ can be used to actually correct a situation, but usually we have ‘Human Right’, and people must be protected. If somebody has done something wrong, there are ways to actually handle the situation and not to beat up the person.

When inquired again by the host, if there has been any difference in the operations of the police service, comparing todays policing to those of yesteryears, he answered in the affirmative, “Of course things are advancing. Am sure in those days, perhaps, people used to be arrested and put in the police cells, with no immediate bail, but a lot of things have changed now, where people can be bailed within 48 hours. There is a difference, the country is changing, but there are still things we have to look at. It is not about the fact that people are undisciplined, the police must train their people more in human right”.

BACKGROUND

A 36-year-old nursing mother, who goes by the name, Patience Osafo is reported to have been assaulted by a police officer at the Midland Savings and Loans Company limited, on Thursday July 19, 2018, when she went to cash her money.

A medical report suggested that, she has suffered severe bruises, and a two-month-old baby she was holding while being assaulted, also suffered some scowls on the face as well.

The victim is said to have received medical attention over 48 hours after the incident.

Initial report advocated that, she came to the banking hall after closing hours and was told to go and come back the following day for her money, but she refused and was subsequently bartered by officer Amanor. It took the battering of the policeman to drag her out of the office.

Frederick Amanor was captured in a video that netted the incident, pounding the head of the victim several times with an umbrella before resorting to slaps and punches of the woman who was still carrying her baby.

Not even the cry of the baby would deter the police officer from going ahead with his assault.
