NPP MUST TOLERATE DIVERGENT VIEWS – Wereko-Brobby

A founding member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby has stated that the party must be able to show tolerance for dissenting opinions while confirming he has “technically” completed serving a two-year suspension handed him by the party.

Dr. Brobby in June 2013 was punished by the National Executive Committee who deemed his constant criticism of the party for going to court to challenge the 2012 elections results as a conduct which brought the image of the NPP into disrepute.

Speaking on Gh One TV’s morning show GH Today hosted by Kafui Dey and Baisiwa Dowuona-Hammond Monday, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA) said:

“I’m an ‘Emeritus suspendee’; when you are one, you don’t speak on behalf of the party.

“I think technically [my suspension] is over but as Grouche Marx once said, ‘I wouldn’t care to belong to a club that would have me as a member’.

“I would like to see a change of attitude. I would like to be able to think that the party is one that welcomes all strings of opinion because after all, the motto of the predecessors of the party is ‘Ka bi na me nka bi’.

“…I remember that one of the strongest articles I ever wrote was ‘Sika y3 mogya”. I was a member of the Executive of the party, the Chairman then [Da Rocha] simply said ‘you can have your view but we wish that you didn’t make it …’

“I think the important thing in politics is tolerance. If you are not tolerant, you are a dictator. “…when I say things which favours the NPP, I get a certain brand of support, when I say something the other way round you get the same.

Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby also mentioned that his outspoken nature especially on national and party issues is only a battle for Ghana’s development.

“I would like to say that I’m battling for Ghana. Ghana is the only country I have got. Don’t forget I came back to Ghana when I could have stayed back [abroad] and gone on to achieve certain heights… I’ve been here for about 30 years… I chose to come here [Ghana] not to waste my time.”
