Lopetegui: Spain’s players must move with the times

Fresh from his appointment as Vicente del Bosque’s successor, Julen Lopetegui has fired a warning to Spain’s players that they cannot rest on their laurels.

Del Bosque bowed out following an eight year spell which saw La Roja conquer international football by winning both the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

“Everything we’ve achieved before no longer matters,” said Lopetegui to MARCA.

“Internally, we can be happy with what we did then but we are fully focused on the job we have to do now.

“We know the difficulties we will face. It is the same for the players.

“Some of them have been the best in Spanish footballing history, winning honours that no one could before them.

“But they must also understand that they have to live in the present and what they bring to the squad now. We will focus on that.”
