KIDNAPPING: A GROWING TREND IN WEST AFRICA’S SAFEST COUNTRY, GHANA.

Kidnapping has become a growing trend in the West-African sub- region. Ghana, a country considered as one of the safest country in West- Africa has now become a haven for kidnappers. One may ask, how did this happen? Cases of kidnapping have been on the increase after three girls from Takoradi in the Western region of Ghana were kidnapped in August 2018. The recent case of kidnapping that has got the security agency as well as the government worried is the kidnapping of two Canadian women on 4th June, 2019 in Kumasi.
Bailen Chitty, 19 years and Lauren Patricia Catherine, 20 years, were forced into a vehicle at about 8:20pm just when they had stepped out of their apartment at Silver spring in Kumasi. The Government of Canada’s travel information guide has warned Canadian citizens about travelling to Ghana. On June 5, 2019, a tweet warning Canadians that violent crimes such as armed robbery and kidnapping, may occur while they are in Ghana. “Be aware of your surrounding and avoid walking alone or displaying signs of wealth”, the tweet further warned.
The Ghanaian Police in collaboration with the Canadian Embassy are trying to locate the victims. However, it has been disclosed that an Uber driver, who is a suspect is in police custody as he is believed to have transported the Canadians from their hotel. The Ghanaian security agencies have been on high alert following recent cases of kidnapping. Kidnapping in Ghana has become a major concern for Ghanaians and the government since it was a rare case in the past. The government has therefore promised to get to the root cause of kidnapping in the country.
