On Wednesday, 9th October,2022 the Ghana school of law directed students to submit their social media handles for monitoring. This is to ensure that they maintain a character that will conform to the customs of legal profession,
Yaw Oppong, Director of the school , speaking during the swearing in ceremony of the students expressed the request for their social media handles. This will help many students willing to be called to the bar to maintain good conduct .
He said “Everybody will have to provide their social media handles. We are going to look into it and you will be monitored in terms of conduct.”
Joyce Bawa Mugtari, a private legal practitioner and spokesperson of former president John Dramani Mahama has reacted to this information. She reacted to Ghana school of law’s request on her face book wall. Where she said “As lawyers we are enjoined to protect the ideals of the constitution and demonstrably so instructively, the first action before the supreme court for the enforcement of the 1992 constitution was initiated by lawyers.”
She also said the institution responsible for training lawyers is setting out to invade the privacy of its students . This is being done by interfering with a right so sacred under the constitution.
She further said”I hope the Ghana school of law will reconsider this decision that so egregri
-ously violates rights protected in our constitution.”
Meanwhile Elorm Ababio popularly known as “Ama Governor”, a student who just completed(GSL) will not be called to the bar. This is due to a petition filed by a “concerned citizen”. Ama Governor’s conduct is said to violate the regulation of the legal profession.
