GHANAIAN YOUTHS AND NEW RESPONSIBILITY AS HUMAN RIGHT ADVOCATES

There is now a pressing need for Ghanaian youths to take part in the advocacy of Human Rights.

During the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) chapter of the Youth for Human Rights Africa (YoHRA) launch, speaking at the event used the platform to plead with all Ghanaian Youth to take up the role as ambassadors of Human Right.

Statistics explaining that within the 1.2billion population of Africa, the youths form more that 50% and those below the age 15 are 41% so if there is any time the fight for Human Right should be taken any serious it is now and the youths should take up vital roles as active players and make it a responsibility.

Lawyer Sosu went on to make an important appeal to the young journalists In training not to just “lament and trumpet the fate of the about 100,000 children on the streets in the Greater-Accra Region or the about 10,000 boys on the Volta Lake” but to go ahead and take a productive step to fight for the rights of the children who are victims.

He advised them to stand tall and fight hard to make impact and not settle for the status-quo, to make a difference that will stand the test of time and be appreciated.

“Let the generation ye unborn note that you lived in this generation and contributed to substantial changes that gave them a better life. This is a call for action”, he said.

He went ahead to encourage the prospective member of YoHRA to take up responsibility of bringing to public notice the treatment giving to the prisoners by the police, the treatment been received by the patients in the hospital and also hold leaders accountable to the people.

He added that the judges should rise above submitting themselves to manipulations and be confident to defend the law and justice system without fear or favour.

“The justice system must be predictable, certain, sincere and should uphold the values of Rule of Law”, he stated.

He pleaded for fair treatment of all persons in the fight for Human Right both in Ghana and Africa, without being biased on the bases of race, gender, religious affiliation or party colour. For Human Rights advocates just seek to do the will of God, he said

He went ahead identifying some major issues in Africa which boiled down to the Human Rights abuses and are strongly contradicting with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, African Charter on Human and People’s Rights African Charter on Rights and Welfare of the Child and the Human Rights guarantees in our national constitution.

He continued to address the prospective members to stay sincerely truthful to the values of accountability as stated in the YoHRA constitution concerning integrity and accountability and also hold civic education, research and giving legal aid where needed in high esteem.

He told the students to armor up and be prepared for the challenges ahead as the perpetrators of Human Rights abuses will not back down easily.

“You cannot be the voice of the voiceless without attack by individuals who benefit from deprivation of others”, he said.
