GHANA DECIDES ON WHO THE HIGH-LIFE LEGENDARY IS…?

From the past four decades have ghanaians been wondering who the the best high-life artiste of all time is and names that comes to mind is the darling man Charles Kojo Fosu popularly known as Daddy lumba, “iron boy” hitmaker Daniel Amakye Dede and the “tom and jerry” star Kojo Antwi. During one of Ghana’s favorite event dubbed the ‘legends and legacy ball’ which celebrates musicians who have made positive impact on the general public, these artistes showed much of professionalism and stage craft during each and everyone’s performance and that has caused many music lovers thinking in their comfort zone about whom they think is the best of all time. pinkfmonlinegh.com takes a critical insight as to who emerges as the fans’ favourite.

Daddy-LumbaDADDY LUMBA: His collaborative effort was Ahenfo Kyinye (2004) with Pat Thomas. Daddy Lumba’s other albums include: Obi Ate Meso Bo, Sika Asem, Ohia Asem, Playboy, Sesee Wo Se, Odo Foforo, Biribi Gyegye Wo, Back For Good, Mesom Jesus, Hwan Na Otene, Ebi Se Eye Aduro, Aben Wo Ha, Adepa Hye Adepa, Poison, Ofie Banbofo, Mato Odo Mu, Bubra, Tokrom, Asee Ho and Odo Bewu Dee. In December 2007, he reunited with Nana Acheampong for a concert and there are talks of the two having another album together. Lumba proved that he is still a force to reckon with when he scored several nominations in the 2008 Ghana Music Awards with his album Tokrom. In all he has 22 albums that he wrote and produced. Altogether he has released more than 25 albums as a songwriter, or singer or producer or all three including his 25th album, Sika, in December 2008. In 2011  he released “Ko Kye Po” and finally released “hossana” which features gospel icon Isaiah Kojo Ampong in 2015.

 

AMAKYE DEDE: Dede began his career in 1973 when he joined the Kumapim Royals as a composer and vocalist. This band, led by Akwasi Ampofo Agyei (AAA), had hits such as “Abebi Bewua Eso”, “Wanware Me A”, “Odo Mani Agyina”, and the seminal “Ohohoo Batani”. Dede moved to Nigeria where he had his hit “Jealousy go shame”.He then formed his own band, the Apollo High Kings, in 1980. He dominated the highlife scene in the 1980s and 1990s and has continued to have hit songs in the 21st century.He made almost 20 albums. In his later career, he experimented with different genres; soca, calypso, lovers rock and pop music.He owned a very popular bar in Accra called Abrantee Spot, where he celebrated live-band music.Some of his popular songs include “Handkerchief”, “Seniwa”, “Brebrebe yi”, “Mensuro”, “Mabre”, “Broken Promises”, “Nsuo Amuna”, “Sokoo na mmaa pe”, “Kose kose”, “Dabi dabi”, “Mefre wo”, “Okyena sesei”, “Odo nfonii”, “Nka akyi”, “M’ani agyina”, “To be a man na war”, and “Iron Boy”.

KOJO ANTWI:Today, Kojo´s popularity in Ghana cannot be described with words alone. Series of awards, Nr. 1 hits in any Music charts around the country with any album he releases, nonstop airplays, TV shows in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo, Senegal and U.T.N.A.,(United Television Network of Africa), tells how fast his career is gaining grounds to cover Africa as a whole. He was currently nominated for the African Musician of the year 1996 held in July in Johannesburg, South Africa, only to be beaten by Papa Wemba.Kojo has already made tours in Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Senegal, he is currently on Tour in Ivory Coast till end of March, and Burkina Faso, playing only at State Halls and Stadiums for thousands of people. In Ghana any performance with the star gets sold-out.He was invited direct from Ghana in ´93 as the aspiring star of Africa for the famous African Festival in Delft, Holland. He also passed through Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and the U.K. performing upon the invitation of the African Societies thus making this tours more African than European.
