Everton striker Enner Valencia confronted by police after Ecuador training over alleged £13,500 child maintenance bill

Police and lawyers met Enner Valencia after an Ecuador training session over an alleged sum of £13,500 owed in child maintenance.

The striker currently on loan at Everton was being put through his paces with the national side ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Chile.

Lawyers arrived at the session with the intention of detaining the player at Atahualpa Stadium in Quito.

They were in possession of a judicial order and represented the mother of Valencia’s five-year-old daughter.

Paul Marin, one of the lawyers working for the child’s mother spoke to assembled journalists, as reported in the Liverpool Echo.

He said: ‘It’s lamentable that certain police officers didn’t collaborate with the detention of the footballer Enner Valencia, to ensure compliance with a judicial order.’

‘If they say this man earns so much, why doesn’t he pay (the maintenance) monthly to his daughter,’ said Marín.

Neither the player nor his lawyers made any statement regarding the incident.

It remains to be seen how this incident will effect Valencia in a professional capacity or if he is selected at all.
