ECOSIA – A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO GOOGLE, YAHOO & CO.?

Surfing the Internet and doing something good for our environment at the same time – that is the promise of the German search engine called Ecosia. With every request Ecosia plants a tree in a country where it is needed. But does it work in reality?

Ecosia’s promises

In South America, Europe, Asia and Africa, Ecosia plants trees with the help of partner organizations. Every second one tree is planted for about 20 cents (about 1 GHS) what you can pursue on their website ecosia.org, founded in 2009 by Christian Kroll in Berlin.

With every search request the firm earns 5 cents (equal to 0.3 GHS). Most of their money, they make out of advertisement and donations. 80% of the earnings are going to charitable conservation organisations in the certain country. At the moment 7 million people use this engine, so about 35 million trees could be planted up to now.

Projects in Africa

In Africa Ecosia planted trees in Morocco, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Madagaskar. At the moment, most of the earned money is invested in a project in Burkina Faso where the company supports the organisation “WeForest” trying to improve the water supply for the plants.
For one planted tree in Burkina Faso, six people have to use the search engine once.

Since lately, Ecosia cooperates with a tree farm in Ghana. 19 farmers are working on the “Ecosia Tree Aid Program”. They planted about 700 000 new plants.

All in all…

Ecosia is a possibility to do effortlessly something good. The majority of the users is satisfied with the work of this search engine, but some criticize that sometimes there are not enough search results so they are “forced” to use Google again.
Nevertheless, Ecosia thinks positive: In 2020 they want to have planted one billion trees.
