DISABLED RIGHTS: MP SUMMONED BEFORE PARLIAMENT

The Ghana Disability Forum has summoned the Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East, Kasoa constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson before the leaders of the parliament of Ghana.

In a copy of the summons letter copied to pinkfmonlinegh, the Forum finds a comment made by the mp in a Pink fm morningshow in which she described the flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akuffo Addo as “not a paralyzed person to be carried away in a vehicle” as it was been speculated by critics during the standard bearer’s tour to the constituency.

The leaders of the forum has described this as a breach of the Ghana Disability Act 715 and an infringement on the rights of the disabled.

Members of the forum disagrees to people using them as examples most especially in public speeches and statements.

Dear Hon. Koomson,

Re: Akuffo Addo is not Apakye, MP Ridicule the Physically Challenged

Please our attention has been drawn to the above publication as comments attributed to your
honourable self on Pink 96.9 FM on 22 June 2016 with link as http://pinkfmonlinegh/8740-2/

We, the Ghana Disability Forum, are an independent organisation that seeks to improve the
livelihood of persons with disability by ensuring the Ghana Disability Act 715 as enacted by the
Parliament of Ghana in 2006 is upheld. Hence, the publication has directly drawn the interest of
the disabled community into the alleged scandalous comment which has the tendency of
stereotyping and discriminating against persons with disabilities.

In this light, we will wish you clarify the publication by Pink 96.9 FM for subsequent redress. As
a parliamentarian and a law maker, we deem it proper that after passing the Disability Act 715 it
is expected we all live by the letter and spirit of the law, hence your response is highly desired.

Be informed as the publication is already in the public domain, we also deem it fit to copy this
letter to the Speaker of Parliament and the Minority Leader for information and future reference
purposes.

Regards,

Alex Tetteh
