ARGENTINA PLAYERS ASK FOR THE REMOVAL OF COACH SAMPAOLI AFTER DEFEAT

Argentina players didn’t have a meeting to discuss the removal of coach Sampaoli (Tyc)

Despite reports that the Argentina players have called for Jorge Sampaoli’s head, he is expected to remain in his post until the end of the World Cup.

Argentina head coach Jorge Sampaoli is set to remain in charge until the end of the side’s World Cup campaign, despite rumours of a player revolt in the wake of Thursday’s heavy group-stage defeat to Croatia.
However, it is expected that the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) will move to replace the former Chile and Sevilla boss, who took over on a five-year deal last summer, after the tournament in Russia.
The Albiceleste are on the brink of failing to reach the knockout stages after goals by Ante Rebic, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic sealed a 3-0 win for Croatia in Yekaterinburg, and left the two-time winners third in Group D with just one point from two games.

It has been reported in Argentina that the squad has called for Sampaoli to be fired, with TyC Sports claiming that Jorge Burruchaga, who is currently general manager of the national team, has been approached with a view to taking charge of the side’s final group match against Nigeria on Tuesday.

Sacking Sampaoli would cost AFA nearly 20 million euros
But sacking Sampaoli would be likely to cost the AFA – which is already paying former Argentina bosses Gerardo Martino and Edgardo Bauza as it is – just under 20 million euros.
With no provision for Sampaoli’s contract to be unilaterally rescinded until after the 2019 Copa América, it is thought that a mutual agreement to part ways will be sought after the World Cup.
