Catalan is the name of the people who live in Catalonia. This is a region in the north-east of Spain. In that area is also the very known city Barcelona. The region has a special position within Spain. People there are very different from the rest of the people in Spain in respect to some aspects. For example, their own language and different traditions.
There are reasons for the differences. In the past the people of Catalonia were suppressed by the Spain people. They were not allowed to speak their own language. So they were forced to speak Spanish. Many people can remember that time very well. That is why today, they really want to keep the special worth and characteristics of their region.
Some Catalans say they would like to be independent from Spain. “We want our own state!” Other people prefer to keep everything as it is. They are worried that the separation might harm Spain. In addition, the Catalans could get problems with other countries.
On Sunday, there will be an election. The people of Catalonia have to decide if they want to be part of Spain or start their own country.
But there is still debate about the question whether they can vote at all. A court in Spain has prohibited the vote. Whether there will actually be a choice is still unclear. Just like the consequences that such a vote would have.
Nevertheless, many people in Catalonia would like to vote on Sunday. They want to show: “We want to decide about our future”.
