SEVEN SUSPECTED KILLERS OF MAJOR MAHAMA TO FACE TRIAL IN ACCRA

Seven accused persons put before the Cape Coast District in connection with the murder of Major Maxwell Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region have been discharged by the court.

This follows the discontinuation of the case by the police for the accused to be transferred to Accra for prosecution.

The seven including the Assembly Member for Denkyira Obuasi, William Baah, who is alleged to have incited others to kill Major Mahama, have been charged with murder.

The others are Philip Badu, 30, a prison assistant, Yaw Annor, 32, mason; Kofi Badu, 29, farmer; Kofi Nyame, 29, farmer and Anthony Amoah, 23, a motorbike operator.

Prosecutor’s prayer

Police prosecuters prayed the court to discharge the accused persons, since the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service had taken over the case.

The accused first appeared before the court on June 1, 2017, but the case was adjourned to yesterday after the prosecutor, ASP Hilarious Avonyo, had prayed the court to remand them to enable the law enforcement agencies to carry out further investigations into the case.

The Cape Coast District Court, presided over by Ms Rita Amoaninwah Edusah, discontinued the case and asked the police to allow the accused access to their counsel and give those who had injuries access to medical care.

Counsel for the accused persons Mr. George Bernard Shaw, agreed with the decision, saying he was hopeful the accused would be given adequate access to their counsel.
