Gareth Southgate confirms that Wayne Rooney will remain captain after controversial boozing session… as he hints at Three Lions future for Steven Gerrard

Gareth Southgate has confirmed Wayne Rooney will keep the England armband following his early-hours boozing session during the previous international break.

Rooney’ conduct came under scrutiny last month after he was photographed during a late night drinking session ahead of the friendly against Spain.

The FA have reviewed the incident and Southgate says Rooney will continue in his role as skipper.

Southgate also hinted that recently retired midfielder Steven Gerrard could have a future in the England set up.

The 36-year-old confirmed last week that was hanging up his boots after a glittering career in which he won 114 caps for England – the third most by an outfield player in history.

‘The door is always open,’ remarked Southgate when asked about a potential role for Gerrard with the Three Lions.

Southgate has been confirmed as the new full-time England manager after taking the role on a temporary basis following the sudden dismissal of Sam Allardyce in September after an undercover sting by a newspaper.
