CAPE COST: A BEAUTIFUL CITY WITH A BIG HISTORY

Cape coast is a city in the south of Ghana. It was founded by the people of Oguaa. Cape coast has a population of 169.894 people. Between 1482 and 1786 clusters of castles and forts were erected along the 500 kilometer-long coastline of Ghana. Back than Ghana was called the Gold Coast. In the 15th century Portuguese were the first settlers on the Gold Coast. The European powers were in a fight over the domination of the Gold Coast and attacked, exchanged, sold and abandoned each other during almost four centuries.

A special place of interest in Cape Coast is the El Mina Castle, where many slaves were imprisoned and reduced to yet another commodity. The majestic fortresses along Ghana’s breathtaking coast housed dark dungeons, overflowing with misery and despair, right up until the slave trade was gradually abolished by each of the colonial powers in the first half of the 1800s.

Yet, only from west Africa 6 million slaves had been shipped to other countries. About 10-15% died at sea during the so-called Middle Passage and never reaching their final destination.

Of cours there are also other attractions which are less tragically. For example the Kakum National Park or the fisher fleet. Those you have also have to see at least once in your life.

Than cape coast also is the seat of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana’s leading university in teaching and research. The university was established in 1962 out of a dire need for highly qualified and skilled manpower in education. The university, which is five kilometers west of Cape Coast, is on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It operates on two campuses: the Southern Campus (Old Site) and the Northern Campus (New Site).
