Barcelona chief Jose Luis Bartomeu reveals contract talks with Luis Suarez are underway following reports of £135m Manchester United transfer

Barcelona have opened contract talks with Luis Suarez and are confident the striker will sign a new deal despite talk of a world record transfer to Manchester United.

A report last week suggested that Jose Mourinho was willing to splash £135million to bring the former Liverpool man to Old Trafford after becoming frustrated with his side’s lack of goals.

But Barca president Jose Luis Bartomeu has revealed the club are already in discussions with Suarez’s representatives over extending his contract, which is due to expire in the summer of 2019.

Speaking about speculation linking the 29-year-old with a move to Manchester,Bartomeu told Sky Sports: ‘We read, we listen, we see this news, but of course, our interest in this particular case is that Luis Suarez is happy at Barcelona.

‘For me, he is probably the best striker in Europe and we want him to be with us.

‘Right now, we are trying to extend his contract with Barcelona and he is one of our big future efforts because he is still young, he has a vision, a lot of ambition.

Asked whether the links with City get to him, Bartomeu recently told The Daily Telegraph: ‘No, not annoyed. This is a decision for Leo Messi or for any player to change club.

‘Right now Leo Messi has a contract to the end of the Russian World Cup [in 2018] and we are very happy with him. Very happy. He’s the best player in the world, by far.’
