An official at the United Press for Development Network, Mr. Kevin Manor, has declared that the network still holds its stance to discharge the Inspector General of Police (IGP) from his duties.
According to Mr. Manor, a person assigned to a position is expected to discharge his responsibilities duly, but in his view, it is dissimilar in the case of Mr. David Apeatu, the IGP.
Concerning an assaulted Journalist by the Police earlier this year, Mr. Manor claimed that a petition was sent to the IGP and made follow-ups but it was just until recently a press statement was released.
In his view, the UNDP official stated that, “We don’t see the use of the IGP. He only bears the title but is not fit enough for the position”.
He further stated that, crime is on the rise but the Police are not up to task and that has engulfed the public in fear. The UNDP officer made mention that the Inspector General is incompetent and for this reason, he must be sacked.
Mr. Manor asserted that the Police Service is in charge of maintaining law and order but in his observation, the issue of unemployment had led “just anybody” to be recruited into the service. Due to that, the vow taken by the Police to protect the public was not intended.
In the case of the mugged Journalist which took place at the forecourt of the Police Headquarters, Mr. Manor supported his claims by affirming that the IGP in a statement revealed no CCTV cameras were effective to capture the incident upon its happening. Thus, the Policemen involved in manhandling the Journalist cannot be figured out.
The UNDP representative argued that Mr. David Apeatu is aware of his men who were on duty on that day and for that matter, he could have conducted a search to fish out the offenders.
Mr. Manor also claimed that, from his perspective, the IGP is covering up for his men. He questioned the tuition offered to members of the service and asked whether they are examined regularly to find out how they are executing their obligations.
“We still see him as incompetent for the work”, Mr. Kevin Manor concluded.
