Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), has praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for its pledge to uncap the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), calling it a necessary step to unlock crucial funding for educational infrastructure. Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express monitored by www.pinkfmonlinegh.com, Asare emphasized that current financial limits on GETFund hinder its potential to address Ghana’s educational infrastructure needs effectively.
According to Asare, uncapping GETFund could potentially release an additional ¢25 billion over four years, nearly doubling the fund’s capacity to an estimated ¢50 billion. This increase could support transformative projects in underserved areas, such as replacing makeshift classrooms with modern school buildings.
While the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suggested streamlining infrastructure planning through database harmonization, Asare argued that such an approach would have limited impact without substantial funding. He urged political leaders to consider uncapping GETFund as a practical solution to overcome the financial barriers to improving educational infrastructure.
Asare concluded by stating that tackling the root issue of resource constraints is essential for meaningful educational reform, asserting that uncapping GETFund could genuinely address the infrastructure challenges facing Ghana’s schools.
