TWITTER REACTS TO PROPOSED CHANGE OF NIGERIA’S NAME

The Nigerian House of Reps has received a proposal to change the name of the country. Twitter duly reacts to the news after hearing of it.

The new name was proposed by Mr Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant. This is because its current name was imposed by Nigeria’s past colonial masters. The name Nigeria  is derived from the River Niger which enters the country from the north-west.

The tax consultant also suggested amendments to the constitution. This would reflect fiscal federalism, state or regional resource and taxation control, and review of the Exclusive Legislative List.

Mr Jokotoye’s choice of a new name was United African Republic. This would reflect the hundreds of ethnic groups that comprise the country. He said the name should be changed to reflect a new beginning physically and psychologically.

Twitter does not miss this opportunity and reacts to the news.  Although some were in favor of this choice, many seemed to oppose it.  Mr Jokotoye came up with an alternative – the United Alkebulan Republic. The new suggestion does not sound as pan-African as the first, but has the same initials.

What name would the citizens be identified by? Would they be called Uranium, Urea  or UARians?

In the coming weeks as lawmakers sift through the bags of suggestions from Nigerians, no one is sure what other ideas will bubble out. Will the name Nigeria be maintained or discarded? Changing the name of a country does not mean all its problems vanishes. Nigerians are constantly asking for a change in their governance not the country’s name.
