A devastating bus accident on Saturday claimed the lives of seven players from Chavuma Town Council FC, casting a shadow over Zambian football. The team was en route to a third-tier league match in the northwest region when the tragic incident occurred.
In addition to the seven fatalities, twelve others sustained injuries, with five in critical condition evacuated to Lusaka for advanced medical care. Authorities have yet to release the names of the victims.
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, with FAZ President Andrew Kamanga stating, “We are in touch with football, civil, and law enforcement authorities to gather full details.”
CAF President Patrice Motsepe also extended his condolences: “I convey my personal and CAF’s deepest condolences. May God comfort the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.”
Artur de Almeida e Silva, head of Southern Africa’s regional football associations, described the loss as “truly heartbreaking,” emphasizing the unifying power of football and offering sympathy to all affected.
As the football community mourns, thoughts and prayers remain with the families of the deceased players and those still recovering from their injuries.
