Social Media Users must be careful of the supposed accounts of public figures they follow as a lot of scammers are actively impersonating these public figures and celebrities. Apparently, a Tik Tok account with the name “saaheneosei” has drawn the attention of many.
Saahene Osei, the second son of Dr Osei Kwame Despite on Tuesday November 16 issued a disclaimer pertaining to a particular Tik Tok account that bared his name. Screenshots of the account user engaging with other users of the platform have surfaced online . In one of the shots, an unknown user seemed to be intrigued in the conversation thinking that she was chatting with the millionaire’s son. Her enthusiasm died out when the scammer requested for a twerking video of her.
Saahene Osei on seeing the fraudster’s potentiality of tarnishing his reputation wrote;
“Crazy how 20,000 of you are being scammed on there, this is not me! Be careful out there yoo”
Most public figures and intending followers have been victims of social media fraud. Mrs. Adelaide Heward-Mills, wife of Bishop Dag of Light House Chapel has- had their share of the cake on Instagram. Scammers also pose as Members of Parliament and Ministers of State on platforms like Linked In.
Some social media platforms have put measures in place to curb the situation. Twitter for instance suspended Ghanaian Rapper Medical’s account for impersonating the president of Ghana even though it was for a hilarious purpose. Yet the issue of impersonation and scams seems to be unending.
Stakeholders must come on board; various social media platforms must strengthen the security measures put in place. Public Figures and celebrities should try as much as possible to get their account verified. The public should also beware of the people they follow and have conversations with.
