In a world filled with fear and pain, there exists a darkness deeper than violence. This darkness pierces the heart of the perpetrator and causes pain to the victim. There comes a light that shines bright and overcome the darkness as it brings hope and solutions. Let’s explore the mysteries of sadism.
According to psychologist, Sadism is deriving sexual pleasure from inflicting pain, humiliation and suffering on others. The person that inflicts the pain is called a sadist. A sadist cannot only harm people physically but also say things that will affect the person emotionally and mentally.

The unbelievable but yet interesting thing about a sadist is that they intentionally cause personal harm to satisfy themselves. Psychologist called this condition a Sadistic Personality Disorder (SPD). Originally, SPD was used to describe individuals that finds sexual pleasure in hurting others. The term was expanded and it included the overall satisfactions and pleasures individuals get from the suffering of others. This disorder is caused by abuse from past relationships and the people around the person, exposure to violence. Also, when children are allowed to witness others commit violent acts or torture others, they tend to behave like them. Extreme poverty, frequent personal failures, and bulling can also be causes of SPD.
In an interview with Selina, she said “I am a sadist and I feel very excited when I see people suffering.” According to her, she got this as a result of her experiences in past relationships. She stated, “I am not lucky with relationships but my last relationship made me like this. The man used to abuse me both physically and emotionally. Finally, he impregnated me and left me. I suffered as a single mother so I developed that pleasure whenever I see people suffering. I personally hurt myself and I feel good about it.”
Theodore Million, a psychologist categorized SPD into four types. Each types reflects the temperament of the sadist. Individuals who behave in a cruel or harmful way towards others because they are insecure and lacks courage are spineless sadist. This type of SPD describes individuals that hurt people but lacks the strength to take responsibility for their actions. They try to cover their weakness by acting tough and confident and they often target those who are vulnerable or powerless.
Tyrannical sadism on the other hand refers to individuals that uses power, manipulation or abuse to exert control over others. They use words as tools to manipulate others seeking to force them into submission. They get excitement from making people feel scared and their behavior is destructive, lacking humanity and compassion.
However, Individuals who find ways to rightfully inflict pain on others are the enforcing sadist. These individuals take roles like law enforcement and management that gave them the power to have control over others. They use this to punish people in the name of them not following rules and regulations. They derive pleasure in causing harm to those they view as disobedient and deserve punishment.
Moreover, Explosive sadism refers to individuals who have a tendency to suddenly become very angry and act in a cruel way towards others. They may keep their feelings of anger in them for a long time. When they reach a breaking point, they explode with rage. Surprisingly, after their outbursts they may feel regretful or remorseful.
There are ways in which SPD can be treated. However, before the treatment, the person has to be convinced that they have a problem and they need treatment. This is actually the difficult part of it since they take pleasure in seeing others suffer. This is to say they may take pleasure in being noncompliant with treatment if they go at all.
The most effective methods of treatment are psychotropic medications and long-term psychotherapy. This therapy helps individuals to recognize the way sadistic behavior harm others. It can also help individuals in changing their thinking and teach them new ways of responding to events around them.
This is the mysteries of sadism. Anyone around you can have SPD so let’s try to support our friends and loved ones with this disorder.
