Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Reports No Payment Received Despite $30M Government Assurance

Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited has disclosed that it has yet to receive any portion of the $30 million payment authorized by the Ministry of Finance and directed through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD).

The update comes after the power producer shut down its 560MW plant due to a $259 million debt owed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, Business Development Manager for Sunon Asogli, explained that although they were informed of the payment authorization in early October, no funds have been disbursed.

According to Dr. Apetorgbor, CAGD attributed the delay to logistical issues related to salary payments, which required splitting the payment into several tranches, none of which have materialized.

“This is November, and not even one tranche has been paid,” Dr. Apetorgbor stated, urging the Ministry of Finance to improve transparency and accuracy in public communications.

Persistent debt issues within Ghana’s energy sector have disrupted operations for Independent Power Producers (IPPs), with stakeholders urging timely payments to maintain energy supply stability.
