STREETS OF DESPAIR

The Life of A Kayayo- Agbogbloshie Market.

Every year ladies from the north travel down to the south to engage in kayayo business.

Kayayo is a term given to girls or women from the northern part of who migrate to the southern part of Ghana to work in cities like Accra and Kumasi. These ladies travel from their region due to reasons sometimes beyond their control.

A girl from the north will travel to the south because there is limited work opportunities for her up north to engage in after she is done with some level of education.

The parents of some of these girls in the northern region force them to marry men who are sometimes old to be their father.

For this reason, these girls run away from home escape the arranged marriage and seek greener pastures on the streets of Accra and Kumasi.

Other ladies also find themselves in the business because their parents forced them to engage in the kayayo business so that they can help lessen the financial burden back at home.

When these girls finally come to Accra, they end up passing their nights on the streets, under bridges and on the verandas of stores since they don’t know anyone. The nights of these girls are often threatened by rapists and rain.

Most of the kayayo battle issues with their spine and neck as a result of the heavy loads they carry, some also have ulcer due to the little money the get from the business which is not enough to feed them properly.

Numbers of Kayayei in Accra and Kumasi keep rising every year and help does not seem to be coming.
