The president of the republic delivers his final State of the Nation’s Address.
It’s Tuesday, the 27th of February, 2024. Unlike any other weekday, today is a very important day to Ghanaians.
To Ghanaians, this is the day they find out about the real state of the country’s finances. They will know how the current government has managed or mismanaged the economy. Some believe that the president is just going to read out another document filled with lies and deceit. Others also believe the document will reveal the achievements the government has made during its reign.
Identically the SONA is an annual speech the president delivers to update citizens on the current state of affairs, government policies, achievements and plans for the future. The president will reflect on the past year and outline priorities for the coming year. The SONA provides an opportunity for the president to communicate with the public and stakeholders about the country’s progress and challenges.
This is the last State of The Nation’s Address the president will deliver in his final year of service. Is this going to set a new avenue for development in Ghana? How necessary is this address anyways? The president is just going to waste his and our time today. Nothing beneficial will come out of this. These are some of the questions and statements you’ll hear from Ghanaians today.
As some people are in high hopes for this address, others do not see its importance. The elites will say, Why not listen to what the president has to say? While the market women are also saying, why do I have to leave the market just to listen to him speak “gibberish”?
Prior to this,the opposition party argues that there’s no need for this address. As they see it as another way the ruling party wants to lead the country astray. They are convinced that this address is not going to yield anything beneficial. They will tell you, “Even a toddler knows the state of the nation”. “Every Ghanaian knows the current state of the nation is nothing to write home about”. According to them, the country needs another political party to improve upon the state of the nation. However, the ruling party believes Ghanaians have every right to know what is going on in the country.
Whether or not this document is filled with lies and deceit, we are yet to find out. Like every Ghanaian, I am hoping to see some kind of improvement from the current government through this address.
At 10:00am today, the entire nation will find out the true state of Ghana.
