SLEEPING IN TROTRO; A GOOD OR BAD HABIT

Tro tros are mini buses that travel usually from a particular point to the other and normally have fixed prices. It often has a driver and a conductor often referred to as a “mate” who shouts out the destination, alerts the driver as to where someone is supposed to alight and also collects money from passengers.

Often, these “troski drivers” as others refer to them, have “car owners” whom they work for and give an account of their sales.  Other drivers also own the tro tro they work with.

Some people are of the view that people who use tro tro as a means of transportation are poor hence it is for a certain class of people but this is not always the case. Some are also of the notion that using the tro tro it is economical as compared to taxis.

To some people, using a tro tro can be very exciting despite the challenges and inconveniences that accompany it by sitting by a mate (conductor), whose body odor would sometimes make you want to jump out from the window. And the situation gets worse if you are unfortunate to be sitting by another passenger whom you get to notice because he is making a phone call and worse of it all is if you do not understand their language.  The most exciting part of it all is the petty fights between passengers and conductors as a result of an increment in transport fare

People falling asleep in a tro tro is quite common and easy to come by. Some people especially due to stress, fall asleep immediately they sit in a tro tro. Although sometimes it keeps you relaxed till you get to your destination and helps restore back some energy, many have faced numerous challenges as a result of sleeping in “troskis”.

Why would you sleep in a “troski” when you are not even sure about the person sitting next to you? And even if you do know them, how sure are you that, this person is a thief or not? Some passengers keep dozing off till their head lands on the shoulder of the one sitting next to them without even realizing the inconveniences they are causing. Some also sleep so deep, snore and before they realize, end up losing their phones and other valuable stories. In fact, some people do not notice that they have lost something of theirs until they have alighted. Others also suddenly wake up and realize they have been taken to a different destination because they didn’t realize it when the tro tro got to their destination.

Tro tros are arguably the most common means of transportation by Ghanaians and few other African countries. Though using a tro tro can be very much beneficial and exciting, it comes with a lot of problems as a result of falling asleep in it. It is therefore advisable that, passengers desist from sleeping in tro tros so as to avoid finding themselves in unfavorable situations.
