Renowned Ghanaian filmmaker Shirley Frimpong-Manso has expressed her disapproval of the Ghanaian media and film enthusiasts for their fascination with Tyler Perry’s recent movie, Straw.
She believes that while Tyler Perry is indeed a global brand, the amount of attention and discussion his film has garnered in Ghana is excessive, particularly when local filmmakers like herself are continually overlooked despite producing equally impressive movies.
Speaking in an interview , the Perfect Picture director could not hide her frustration. “Why are we talking about Tyler Perry’s movie when we could easily have that same attention come to a Shirley Frimpong-Manso movie?” she questioned.
She also highlighted that numerous Ghanaian filmmakers are creating compelling narratives that address significant societal challenges, yet they garner far less recognition compared to foreign films in Ghana.
Shirley expressed her disappointment, noting that despite her 17 years of dedication to the Ghanaian film industry and her significant contributions to its development, the support she receives locally pales in comparison to what some content creators in Hollywood receive.
