In a recent Instagram post, Joann Kelly, the daughter of imprisoned R&B singer R. Kelly, has expressed herself for the first time since her shocking disclosure that he allegedly sexually abused her during her childhood.
In her touching message, Joann speaks to her younger self, saying, “Hello, sweet girl… It’s me, you. We’re 26 now. I know you never believed you’d reach 15, but here we are. You might be curious about how we got to this point and what life looks like for us now.”
She recognized the persistent challenges in the world but highlighted her own growth and resilience, saying, “You’ve developed a strength and faith that surpasses your understanding. You finally opened up to everyone… I know, I know. We promised we wouldn’t. But it wasn’t healthy for us any longer. Please don’t be upset with me; I had to do it.”
In honoring her accomplishments, Joann emphasized her journey into motherhood, the restoration of her family, and her endeavors in music and art.
She penned, “You’re a mother—and an incredible one, no less. Your son is both handsome and hilarious, embodying everything you’ve hoped for and more. Your mom is genuinely healing, your siblings are thriving, you’ve reconnected with your blood relatives, pursued music and art, and even made it onto television.”
Remember that R. Kelly received a 20-year prison sentence in February 2023 for child sexual abuse and possession of child pornography. Then, on October 11, 2024, Joann came forward, disclosing that she too had been a victim of his abuse but had felt too frightened to speak out. She mentioned that when she finally found the courage to report him, the authorities told her they could not take action because too much time had passed.
She now claims to have found it within herself to forgive him for the abuse she endured.
