The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has begun auditing new prepaid meters recently installed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company Limited (NEDCo) across the country. The audit seeks to ensure these meters align with PURC’s tariff reckoner for accurate billing and tariff application, following widespread consumer complaints of overbilling after meter replacements.
Speaking at a forum in Accra, PURC Executive Secretary Dr. Ishmael Ackah confirmed that the commission is currently testing the meters and engaging with ECG and NEDCo to resolve the issues. “We are testing some of the meters to verify alignment with our tariff reckoner. Upon completion, we will release our findings,” Dr. Ackah noted.
The new smart meters, part of a nationwide installation project by ECG and NEDCo, aim to improve efficiency and provide accurate real-time data on electricity usage. However, consumers have raised concerns about potential overbilling, prompting the need for this audit.
Dr. Ackah advised consumers to verify the identification of utility staff during meter replacements, document final readings of old meters, and keep records as a safeguard. He also highlighted ongoing consumer education efforts, including guidance on energy-efficient appliance choices and an electricity consumption estimator to help customers manage usage and control costs.
The PURC emphasized its commitment to protecting consumers against unfair billing practices and building trust in utility services.
