President Macron confers the Legion of Honour on President Akufo-Addo in Paris

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has received France’s highest national honour, the National Order of the Legion of Honour (Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur), in recognition of his exceptional commitment to democracy, human rights, and Ghana-France diplomatic relations.

The prestigious Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour (Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur) medal was presented by French President Emmanuel Macron during a ceremony at the Elysee Palace in Paris on November 14.

Established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Legion of Honour is awarded to individuals who demonstrate outstanding service to France or uphold ideals such as democracy, human rights, and humanitarian values. It is divided into five categories, with the Grand Officer ranking among the highest.

Notable recipients of the award include Angela Merkel, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Vladimir Putin.

During his one-day state visit to France, President Akufo-Addo also engaged in bilateral talks with President Macron, addressed a UNESCO event honoring its first African Director-General, Amadou Mahtar-M’Bow, and participated in a session organized by France Volontaires, focusing on international volunteering.
