President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged Ghana’s unwavering support for Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, as she prepares to assume her new role as Commonwealth Secretary-General.
Ms. Botchwey was elected as the seventh Secretary-General during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) in Apia, Samoa, becoming the first African woman to hold the position and only the second woman to do so. Her term, set to begin in April 2025, is expected to focus on fostering regional cooperation and strengthening ties among Commonwealth nations.
Speaking at a ceremony at Kotoka International Airport to welcome Ms. Botchwey home, President Akufo-Addo lauded her diplomatic achievements. “She has done a ‘yeoman’s’ job as foreign secretary and as chairperson of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers. Her excellent delivery on multiple international assignments makes the nation proud,” the President remarked.
The event was attended by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, traditional leaders, and members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of national unity in supporting Ms. Botchwey’s tenure, urging Ghanaians to rally behind her: “She now carries the flag of Ghana on the global stage in a way unseen since the days of our revered diplomat Kofi Annan.”
Ms. Botchwey secured her election by defeating contenders Senator Joshua Setipa of Lesotho and Dr. Mamadou Tangara of The Gambia, with strong support from both President Akufo-Addo and former President John Mahama. This bipartisan backing reflected Ghana’s collective commitment to her leadership.
