OUR RIVER BODIES ARE UNDER THE MERCY OF OUR POLITICIANS
LET'S TALK GALAMSEY

OUR RIVER BODIES ARE UNDER THE MERCY OF OUR POLITICIANS

My Reflection.

When we talk about galamsey, it’s a term used primarily in Ghana to refer to illegal small- scale gold mining activities which the government has no hand in it and also called corruption meaning “gather and sell”.

Galamsey is carried out by individuals or groups who often lack the necessary permits and operate outside of government.

Galamsey has a positive and negative effect on the country. Some positive effects of galamsey are that, some of the miners and communities benefit from the resources they get during their mining activities which helps the economic impact of local communities.

Areas where galamsey is rampant, there can be an improvement in their local economy. In these areas, the money they earn during the mining activities they invest in their local markets for it to benefit the traders and small scale businesses.

Also, galamsey has helped in the development of infrastructure in some cases, individuals involved in galamsey may use the money they generate from the mining activities to build houses, contributing to  developmental  projects in their community.

Some negative effects of galamsey which poses danger to the country include destruction of lands leading to deforestation, land erosion and among others.

Water bodies have been polluted by these galamsey activities where the chemicals like mercury and cyanide used in the extraction of the gold find its way into these water bodies. This destroys our water bodies and affects our daily lives.

Research has also made it clear how dangerous mercury is to human health  and plant survival. Research was conducted on some plantations from mining sites 85 years ago and per the search, the food stuff found at the place still had the mercury from 85 years ago in them.

Both legal and illegal mining activities in Ghana should be banned so that we can protect human life and nature.

I pled and urge the government to take these into consideration.
