Ghanaian musician, songwriter, and creative director Kwame Nsiah-Apau, widely known as Okyeame Kwame, has urged President Akufo-Addo to take action against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
The musician expressed his confusion regarding the president’s inability to deliver on his commitment to end galamsey activities.
“When Nana Addo took office, he promised to prioritize the fight against galamsey. With just three months left before the next election, why hasn’t he announced that our water sources are polluted and called for a temporary halt to mining? What is stopping him from acting? Is he worried that this could impact support for Bawumia? Why is he quiet on the issue of galamsey?” he inquired.
Okyeame Kwame emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration among stakeholders to combat the issues of water body pollution and deforestation. He urged for greater involvement of traditional leaders, as they are closely connected to the regions impacted by these challenges.
He also called for a united political stance to address the issue of galamsey. He emphasized that Ghanaians should avoid political discussions that distract from the urgent need for action against this problem. He claimed that these conversations serve as a way for political parties to regain their investments, which is why there has been a lack of decisive action.
“Our most valuable resources are water and air. So why is there a divide between the NPP and NDC regarding this issue? Both parties have their own interests at stake. This has turned into a political investment recovery agenda for them. We should put aside our political differences concerning the fight against galamsey and come together, united by our love for the country, to address this issue. However, it ultimately relies on President Akufo-Addo,” he remarked.
